Kinderdijk: The Land of Windmills

People know that the Netherlands is famous for its windmills. But have you ever imagine that there is a village where the area was studded with old windmills? It is Kinderdijk. Moreover, many people said that Kinderdijk look like a heaven of windmills.

Kinderdijk is located in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. It is easily reached by public transportation, such as by bus either from Rotterdam Train Station (Rotterdam Centraal) or Utrecht Train Station (Utrecht Centraal), by the fast ferry or Water Bus from Rotterdam Erasmus Bridge.

On arrival at the area, after walking past the souvenir shops and small cafes, the beautiful scenery comes. The giant old windmills scattered among the fields and water canals. It is absolutely beautiful and wonderful.

Not only be amazed by windmills, but many other activities also are offered in Kinderdijk. For visitors who want to explore more this fascinating area, there are Canal Cruise, Horse & Carriage Tours, or just walking or biking through the paths. It is also very interesting, taking a visit inside the windmill museum. The interior evokes the atmosphere of the Dutch traditional house in 17th Century. Wonderful!

A beautiful sight of Kinderdijk can be enjoyed either early in the morning or during sunset. During sunrise and sunset, everything is gold. The sunrise and the sunset, calm water, reflection, windmills create the landscape definitely gorgeous and peaceful. When the sun goes down, silhouette of traditional windmills come. Moreover, in the evening the windmills are illuminated by colorful evening lights. Wonderful effect of the illumination makes the evening dramatic and so awesome.

No wonder, because of all the typical features associated with the old technology of handling water and a series of beautifully preserved windmills, in 1997 UNESCO inscribed the windmill area on the World Heritage list.
