Jomblang and Grubug Cave, Yogyakarta-Indonesia: Vertical Cave Adventure to See the Light from Heaven

"Explore the deepth of the earth". That was my friends' offering, which I couldn't afford, to join them on the cave trip underneath the earth's surface. Jomblang Cave and Grubug Cave in Wonosari - Yogyakarta, Indonesia, became our destinations. After we descended about 70 meters into the cave and walked through the tunnel, we saw the most beautiful underground scenery. It's really amazing.

Jomblang Cave is a vertical cave standing on limestone. The mouth of the cave has a width of 50m and a depth of 60 - 80m. Because its mouth is wide enough for the sunlight reaches the bottom of the cave, dense big trees and shrubs grow at the bottom of cave. It looks like an underground forest.

Jomblang Cave actually is one of 500 caves in that area and it horisontally connects to the other vertical cave, Grubug Cave.  As we were walking along the path in the darkness,  we heard the water dripping onto limestone and the sound of the river stream. There is an underground river indeed and this underground passageway, which is just about 300m, leads us to the mouth of Grubug Cave.

When we approached the mouth of the Grubug Caves, it became brighter, and I could see the beautiful things around us:  crystal, stalactite, and stalagmite. Walked not far from it,  I couldn't believe what was in front of my eyes. It's so awesome , the most wonderful underground view for me.

The sun's rays entered from the top of cave. Through the leaves of the tress above, vertical line of rays falled on the huge stalagmites, which were right in the middle  of the Grubug Cave. It really looked like a heavenly light shone on me. Incredible!!

If you are interested to go to this location, Jomblang Cave and Grubug Cave situated in Kecamatan (subdistrict) Semanu, Pacarejo Village, Gunung Kidul Regency. It's about 17 km from Wonosari (the capital of Gunungkidul regency) or 50 km  southeast of Yogyakarta. Though it is not easy to get there, but many local people know how to get there. That's why the caves can be reached by car or public transportation from Yogyakarta and it is really worth a visit!

Tips from me:

  1. To descend into the Jomblang cave, it requires basic skill of Single Rope Technique (SRT), which is a technique used to ascend/descend ropes underground. As a beginner caver, it is recommended to be accompanied by an expert guide, who  gives you basic instructions and teachs you basic SRT in a safe way. Don't worry, there are also expert guides in the location.

  2. The best time to catch the incredible moment in Grubug Cave is between 11:00 and 14:00. It is the time, when the sun's rays penetrate into the bottom of Grubug cave.
